This qualification provides learners with the skills and knowledge required to work in the building and construction industry in supervisory, management, and administrative roles across residential and commercial construction projects. The qualification includes core units of competency that develop advanced technical, managerial, legislative, financial, and project management skills required to effectively plan, coordinate, supervise, and manage building and construction projects in accordance with Australian building codes, standards, and legislative requirements.
Graduates of this qualification apply technical knowledge and practical skills to interpret building plans and specifications, administer construction contracts, prepare project estimates and budgets, manage construction work, supervise site operations, coordinate contractors, implement work health and safety systems, manage environmental and business risks, and ensure construction projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Live Worksite Training
Varying construction site locations across New South Wales (subject to project availability)

Students are required to attend scheduled classroom sessions, live worksite training, and complete all assessment activities in accordance with the course requirements. Practical training is conducted through a combination of simulated workplace activities and supervised live construction worksites, enabling students to develop the technical knowledge, supervisory skills, and practical experience required to effectively manage building and construction projects in accordance with industry standards, the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant legislation, and workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements.

  • 80 Weeks of Training and Assessment
  • 24 Weeks of Scheduled Term Breaks

Weekly Study Commitment

  • 15 hours face-to-face classroom and live worksite training
  • 5 hours supervised online learning activities

Total Scheduled Learning: 20 hours per week

Supplementary classes may be scheduled where required due to public holidays, missed classes, live worksite availability, or reassessment requirements.
Students are also expected to undertake approximately 5 hours of independent self-study each week to reinforce classroom learning, complete research activities, prepare for assessments, and review course materials.
The qualification is delivered through a structured sequence of classroom learning, supervised online learning, live worksite training, and independent study, enabling students to progressively develop the technical knowledge, supervisory capabilities, project management skills, and workplace competencies required to effectively manage residential and commercial building and construction projects in accordance with industry standards, the National Construction Code (NCC), and relevant legislative requirements.

Units of Competency

To achieve the qualification CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), students must successfully complete the following units of competency.

Entry Requirements

International students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have successfully completed Australian Year 12 or an equivalent qualification.
  • Participate in a pre-enrolment interview and pre-training review.
  • Demonstrate sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) skills to successfully undertake the course.
  • Provide evidence of English language proficiency equivalent to:
  • IELTS Overall Band Score of 6.0; or
  • An equivalent recognised English language test score (e.g. PTE Academic or Oxford English Test).
    • English language evidence may also be demonstrated through previous studies completed in English, subject to Lotus College’s assessment requirements.
    All applicants are required to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment prior to enrolment to identify any support needs and ensure they have the capability to successfully complete the course.
    Applicants should also possess basic computer skills and have access to a laptop or computer capable of running Microsoft Office or equivalent software, as many learning activities, project work, and assessments require the use of digital applications, construction documentation, and online learning platforms.

    Physical Requirements

    Students should be physically capable of participating in classroom activities, live worksite training, and simulated workplace exercises associated with building and construction project management, including:
    • Standing, walking, and moving around construction sites for extended periods.
    • Conducting site inspections and monitoring construction activities.
    • Carrying out site measurements, set-out activities, and interpreting building plans, drawings, and specifications.
    • Using measuring devices, surveying equipment, and construction-related technology.
    • Accessing active construction sites, including navigating uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, and restricted work areas where permitted.
    • Using computers, construction software, and digital technologies to prepare project documentation, estimates, schedules, reports, and construction records.
    • Participating in live worksite observations and practical activities while complying with workplace health and safety requirements.
    • Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during practical training and live worksite activities.
    Students should possess an appropriate level of physical fitness, communication skills, problem-solving ability, and digital literacy to safely undertake the practical, supervisory, and administrative responsibilities associated with building and construction projects in accordance with workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements.

    Safety Requirements

    Students must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during all practical training, simulated workplace activities, and live worksite visits.
    PPE may include:
    • Safety boots complying with AS/NZS 2210
    • High-visibility clothing
    • Hard hat
    • Safety glasses or goggles
    • Work gloves
    • Hearing protection (where required)
    • Dust mask or respirator (where required)
    • Weather-appropriate protective clothing suitable for outdoor construction environments
    Students must comply with all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements, safe operating procedures, and trainer instructions during classroom, simulated workplace, and live worksite activities. All practical activities must be undertaken in accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant workplace safety legislation, Australian Standards, organisational policies and procedures, and manufacturer operating instructions.
    Students are required to identify workplace hazards, follow safe manual handling practices, comply with site-specific safety requirements, use appropriate fall prevention measures where applicable, and maintain a safe and organised work environment throughout all training activities. Failure to comply with safety requirements, safe work practices, or the correct use of PPE may result in students being excluded from practical activities or live worksite training until the required safety standards have been met.
