Qualification Description

This qualification provides learners with the skills and knowledge required to work in the bricklaying and blocklaying industry, undertaking a wide range of residential, commercial and civil construction projects. The qualification includes core units of competency that develop essential construction industry skills, together with specialist bricklaying and blocklaying competencies required to construct masonry walls, structural brickwork, blockwork, decorative brickwork and other masonry structures in accordance with industry standards.
Graduates of this qualification apply technical knowledge and practical skills to interpret plans and specifications, prepare construction materials, carry out setting out, construct masonry walls and structural systems, install flashings and damp-proof courses, construct arches and curved walls, and perform a range of bricklaying and blocklaying tasks using industry-standard tools, equipment and safe work practices.

Students are required to attend scheduled classroom sessions, practical workshop training, and complete all assessment activities in accordance with the course requirements. Practical training is conducted in a simulated workplace environment using industry-standard bricklaying and blocklaying tools, equipment, materials, and construction techniques to ensure students develop the practical skills and knowledge expected by the building and construction industry.

Weekly Study Commitment

  • 15 hours face-to-face classroom and practical workshop training
  • 5 hours online learning activities

Total Scheduled Learning: 20 hours per week

Supplementary classes may be scheduled where required due to public holidays, missed classes, or reassessment requirements.
Students are also expected to undertake approximately 5 hours of independent self-study each week to reinforce classroom learning, complete research activities, prepare for assessments, and review course materials.
The qualification is delivered through a structured sequence of classroom learning, practical workshop activities, supervised online learning, and independent study, enabling students to progressively develop the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and workplace competencies required to work safely and effectively in the bricklaying and blocklaying industry.

Units of Competency

To achieve the qualification CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying, students must successfully complete the following units of competency.

Entry Requirements

International students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have successfully completed Australian Year 12 or an equivalent qualification.
  • Participate in a pre-enrolment interview and pre-training review.
  • Demonstrate sufficient Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) skills to successfully undertake the course.
  • Provide evidence of English language proficiency equivalent to:
  • IELTS Overall Band Score of 6.0; or
  • An equivalent recognised English language test score (e.g. PTE Academic or Oxford English Test).
    • English language evidence may also be demonstrated through previous studies completed in English, subject to Lotus College’s assessment requirements.
    All applicants are required to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) assessment prior to enrolment to identify any support needs and ensure they have the capability to successfully complete the course.

    Physical Requirements

    Students must be physically capable of undertaking practical bricklaying and blocklaying activities, including:
    • Standing, kneeling, bending and squatting for extended periods.
    • Lifting, carrying and handling bricks, concrete blocks, mortar, cement, sand and other construction materials.
    • Using bricklaying hand tools, power tools and construction equipment safely.
    • Mixing mortar and concrete, laying bricks and blocks, constructing masonry walls, arches, piers and other structural elements.
    • Working at heights using restricted-height scaffolding, ladders and elevated work platforms where required.
    • Carrying out measurements, setting out, levelling and interpreting construction plans and specifications.
    • Operating workshop equipment and construction machinery in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements.
    • Performing practical tasks in workshop and simulated workplace environments.
    • Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during all practical training activities
    Students should possess an appropriate level of physical fitness, manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to safely perform manual construction tasks associated with bricklaying and blocklaying in accordance with workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements.

    Safety Requirements

    Students must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during all practical training and workshop activities.
    PPE may include:
    • Safety boots complying with AS/NZS 2210
    • High-visibility clothing
    • Safety glasses or goggles
    • Hard hat
    • Work gloves
    • Hearing protection
    • Dust mask or respirator suitable for protection against silica dust
    • Weather-appropriate protective clothing where required
    Students must comply with all Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements, safe operating procedures, and trainer instructions during practical training sessions. All practical activities must be undertaken using industry-standard tools, equipment, scaffolding, and construction materials in accordance with relevant workplace safety legislation, Australian Standards, and manufacturer operating instructions.
    Students are required to identify workplace hazards, follow safe manual handling practices, use fall prevention measures where applicable, and maintain a clean and organised work area throughout practical activities. Failure to comply with safety requirements, safe work practices, or the correct use of PPE may result in students being excluded from practical training until the required safety standards have been met.
