Course Description

This course empowers learners to become highly skilled senior operators within the hospitality industry, equipped with a blend of managerial expertise and comprehensive industry knowledge. As independent operators, graduates can assume leadership roles, oversee hospitality operations, and make crucial business decisions. This qualification opens pathways to diverse career opportunities in various hospitality sectors, including restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, and cafes. Graduates may pursue roles as departmental or small business managers, with opportunities for specialisation.

  • The qualification is delivered over 78 weeks comprising of:
    • 6 terms of 10 weeks each (60 weeks total)
    • Holiday breaks amounting to 18 weeks
  • Pre-requisites: There are no prerequisites for this qualification.
  • Mode of Study: Students are required to attend 15 hours of face-to-face classroom instruction and 5 hours of online training via MS Teams synchronously each week. Students are required to attend 20 hours of training per week. Practical sessions are conducted in a fully equipped kitchen facility within the institute, providing a real-world learning environment. Moreover, certain units within the course may entail students participating in work placements to fulfill AQF requirements and gain practical industry experience.
  • Delivery Location: Unit 2 206-208 Liverpool Rd, Ashfield- NSW 2131
  • Training Kitchen Location: Practical training will be delivered at a commercial kitchen facility located separately from the main Ashfield campus. Students will be advised of the training kitchen address and schedule prior to course commencement.
  • Course Structure: To achieve qualification SIT50422 – Diploma of Hospitality Management , students must complete the following 28 units of competencies:11 core units, plus, 17 elective units.

  • Assessment Methods: The Diploma of Hospitality Management course, may include assessment methods such as practical demonstrations of culinary skills, Case studies, Projects, Reports, Presentations/Role plays, Knowledge Test and Research.
  • Pathways from the qualification: Successful completion may enable the student to apply for the SIT60322 – Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management or pursue higher education opportunities such as advanced diplomas or bachelor's degrees in hospitality management or culinary arts at other institutions.

Lotus has the following entry requirements:

  • Be 18 years or over
  • Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent
  • Be competent in written and spoken English with an IELTS Score of no less than 6 or equivalent language test score
  • IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 10 weeks) before the main VET course, or
  • IELTS score of 5 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 20 weeks) before the main VET course.
  • Results older than two years are not acceptable.
  • Other acceptable English language tests include TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), and TOEFL PBT.
  • Any AQF qualification at the Certificate III level or above in any discipline area delivered and assessed in English only will be deemed as meeting both the academic and English language entry requirements.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirement

  • All applicants must undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test prior to enrolment. This ensures that appropriate academic support can be provided if required and that students are set up for success throughout their course.

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Resource Requirements

  • Student Equipment Resource Requirements: Students should have access to a computer, laptop or tablet with internet connection to participate in online components of the course, complete assessments, and access digital learning materials. Basic stationery is also recommended. Charging facilities may not be available in classrooms.

Entry Requirements

  • Age Requirements: Students must be above 18 years of age when filling out the application form.
  • Pre-training Review (PTR): A PTR will be conducted before enrolment to ensure that the training meets individual needs. The PTR form must be submitted with the application form, and it covers a review of current competencies, English level, support requirements, and oral communication skills.

English Language Requirements for International Students:

  • Minimum IELTS (General) test score of 5.5 or equivalent for direct entry into a VET course.
  • IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 10 weeks) before the main VET course.
  • IELTS score of 4.5 or equivalent with an ELICOS course (up to 20 weeks) before the main VET course.
  • Results older than two years are not acceptable.
  • Other acceptable English language tests include TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), and TOEFL PBT.

Academic Requirements:

Successful completion of year 12/Senior Secondary School studies in the home country equivalent to the Australian Senior Secondary School Examination (Year 12).

 

Mature Age students without minimum education requirements must demonstrate relevant work experience and a capacity to meet course requirements.

  • Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Test (LLN): Students must undertake an LLN test to ensure sound numeracy skills. Support will be provided based on the test outcome.
  • Computer Literacy Requirements: Basic computer skills are required. Students without these skills will receive support or may be referred for basic computer training.
  • Materials and Equipment Required: Chef Kit, Chef uniform ( see fee schedule) , access to a laptop or computer with the Windows 7 operating system or higher is needed for self-study. An active email address is required for communication.
